WHAT IS THE INTERNET?

First things first. What is the Internet?

The Internet is a system that links computers around the world, enabling them to communicate quickly and efficiently with one another. It is the world's largest computer network, linking together some 200 to 250 million people, depending on who you talk to, with more people being connected or "getting online" everyday. The Internet is also much more than a simple network. The Internet is also:

a massive global information storehouse, where information on virtually any topic can be accessed with a click of your mouse.
the world's largest pen-pal system, where people can exchange e-mail messages via computer.
a marketplace, where services and products are displayed and made available.
a brand new way to distribute ideas. In the same way that the printing press revolutionized our ability to communicate our ideas with one another. The Internet is reshaping the ways in which we communicate - and who we communicate with.

The Internet is a very dynamic place, which means it is constantly going through changes. Web pages and entire web sites are available to receive visitors one day and gone the very next day. You may visit a web site one minute, leave that site and go back to it only to find that it is not presently available. This is caused by any of a number of reasons.

  1. When you request to visit a web site, your request is passed through a number of computers. If any one of those computers handling the passing of your request experiences a problem and is unable to pass on your request, you will not be able to connect to that site.
  2. The pages that the site is made of may be being modified and are temporarily unavailable while this is being done.
  3. The web site may have been moved to another location or removed from the Internet completely.

Regardless of why the "404 Page Not Found" (a common error message) occurs, simply visit another page and go back to the one you were attempting to visit. You may find that it's suddenly available again. If not, try visiting again the next day.
