WHAT IS THE WORLD WIDE WEB?

Good question. We're glad you asked.

Perhaps it's best to think of the Web as similar to our phone system. In the same way that our phone system links phones all over the planet, the Web links computers. The Web is a tool that allows computers around the world to be connected with each other. It's a way of making the Internet much easier - and more fun - to use. The World Wide Web is made up of hundreds of thousands of "sites". A Web site is simply a place to which you can go to access information.

There are Web sites on thousands of different topics.
Every Web site is unique.
Organizations throughout Canada and the rest of the world are establishing Web sites.
The main page of a site is called the home page.
A single Web site can contain dozens of pages.

Each page in a site usually contains links to other pages in that site. It may also include links to pages in other Web sites on computers all over the world. You jump from page to page through "links": these are highlighted words that - when clicked on - transport you to another page. It's as easy as pointing your mouse and clicking.

Also, with the arrival of the Web, the Internet was no longer restricted to just text. A well designed website is something attractive to look at. When you look at a Web site you see fonts in different styles, colors, and sizes, along with logos, images, buttons, and pictures. The Web changes, grows, and expands every day. And it's all out there, waiting for you to discover it.

You've made that all important first step. You made it to the TC Computer Services Web site.
